Liam Neeson is coming for the bad guys yet again in Cold Pursuit, but this time things get truly out of hand.
A remake of the Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance, Neeson takes over the role of a grieving, vengeful father from Stellan Skarsgård. His son has been killed by a local gang and his fury over the loss leads him to take drastic countermeasures. Problem is that he’s used to plowing snow not murdering large swaths of people, so his plans don’t exactly go off as hoped. In a little twist from the usual Neeson-avenges-his-family flick, his bumbling will bring a bit of a bit of levity to these deadly affairs.
Director Hans Petter Moland was retained from the Norwegian version, which bodes well for the off-kilter tone being replicated. Perhaps he’ll even add some new twists to keep the material from becoming stale.
Neeson should have fun flexing a bit with the humorous aspects, and he’s got quite the cast to play against. Emmy Rossum appears in a perfect casting choice as a deadpan police officer while Laura Dern takes on the role of his grieving wife. How much that either get involved remains to be seen, but I’m personally hoping both get their hands dirty.
Whether it sticks close to the original or veers off on a slightly different path, Cold Pursuit promises to be partly what you expect and partly what you don’t from a Liam Neeson action film.
