The Cinephile’s Lounge: Week 23

Avatar photo

Ahoy, mateys!

Let’s go to London and let’s pretend we’ll all watch a great movie together here. The week has been long and arduous, and I could sure use a drink and chat with some fellow cinephiles!

The Lexi Cinema, London, U.K.

This is the very first Cinephile’s Lounge after we moved to FilmInquiry.com! It’s been a busy but very exciting week here. We’ve all been working our asses off, and it’s been a lot of fun! I would also like to announce that Kimberly Gamble, long-time writer for Film Inquiry (and before, The Movie Scrutineer) is will now also help us out as editor! Thanks so much for your enthusiasm, Kim!

What We Watched

This week I saw Edge of Tomorrow, which I already reviewed, and The Rover, which I’m not allowed to say anything about until after this weekend – so mysterious… I’ll be seeing How To Train Your Dragon 2 this weekend. I really enjoyed the first so I’m curious to see whether the sequel is going to live up to my high expectations. I also watched The Lego Movie, and the everything is awesome song has been stuck in my head all week.

Otherwise, I’ve been watching some (okay, a lot of) House of Cards, caught up with Game of Thrones and Penny Dreadful and I’m planning to watch the first episode of Crossbones, featuring the magnificent John Malkovich. If you’ve already seen it, what did you think? I’ve always had a soft spot for pirate stories (my dad used to tell my brother and me bedtime stories of pirates, my little brother was a very fearsome captain, lol), so watching this show is a total no-brainer for me.

What did you watch this week? Anything you’d recommend?

Anything you’re planning to see and are excited about?

Question of the Week

I’ve been going to the cinema a lot more lately, and I’ve been thinking… What do you prefer: seeing a movie in a theater or at home?

I’m undecided. I enjoy watching a movie at home, having dinner on the couch, cuddling up with my partner or cat (or both)… But when you’re in the cinema you get sucked into the movie entirely. I usually experience the film a lot more deeply if I see it in a cinema. I guess I get distracted too easily – can you focus on a film at home as much as in a cinema?

Reading Material

We always like to share other people’s work! Feel free to share articles in the comments, too, we’re always looking for interesting and entertaining reads!

Not really reading (or watching) material, but a handy resource: the other day I found Flickseeker, a website where you can search through their database not by genre or keyword, but by mood. I like the movies under their “thought provoking” tag. Some other tags they use are “gripping”, uplifting”, “smart” and “beautiful”. Check it out!

And finally… My favorite gif of the week… The Breakfast Club (1985)

Happy weekend 😀
