Amazon gets in on the teen romances with Chemical Hearts, the latest from writer/director Richard Tanne.
While Netflix has seemingly cornered the market on fluffy romances, Amazon is looking to get in on the action with a slightly more serious take. Instead of love triangles and meet-cutes, their’s has a lonely senior falling for a new student with a complicated past.
It’s bound to be tough starting a new school, and Grace doesn’t exactly seem willing to jump into the new ecosystem. But she’s assigned to work on the school newspaper, where a bored Henry picks up the fact that there’s something she’s holding back. Curiosity unfurls into something much more, making their year far more interesting than either of them anticipated.
Despite the weighty spin, this should still be a less complicated romance than Tanne’s previous film. Last time he took on the beginnings of former President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama’s relationship in Southside with You, and is free of political history should make Chemical Hearts a cakewalk in comparison.
Still, the complications that are there are what attracted Riverdale and Hustlers star Lili Reinhart to the project, which she executive produced as well. Her potential beau is played by Austin Abrams (Euphoria, Paper Towns).
This looks like a familiar territory for all involved, which will hopefully make for a great movie to curl up to on your couch.
Chemical Hearts is directed by Richard Tanne and stars Lili Reinhart, Austin Abrams, and Sarah Jones. It will be released in the US on Amazon Prime on August 21st, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
