Plunge into the messiness of adulthood with Cha Cha Real Smooth, the latest from writer/director Cooper Raiff.

Andrew is trying to figure himself out post-college. Like many graduates, he hasn’t landed a career per se, but he’s making ends meet as a party host for local Bar Mitzvahs. When he gets a girl on the autism spectrum onto the dance floor he lands an extra gig sitting for her, and in that time grows close to the girl’s mother. The chemistry between them is palpable, but since she’s engaged, their lives don’t exactly fit together.

The film is another singular vision from Raiff, who burst onto the scene a couple of years ago with Shithouse. He also wrote, directed, and starred in that one, just like he does in Cha Cha Real Smooth, but here he’s aging up both his character and expanding the production with his newly acquired clout.

The most notable upgrade is in his co-stars, who are now big names that will hopefully take his film farther (as will a name you can put on a poster). For instance, the mother he falls for is played by Dakota Johnson, with Leslie Mann and Brad Garrett also co-starring. Evan Assante and Vanessa Burghardt (in her first film role) round out the cast.

Word from its festival run is that this is a winning romantic dramedy, so expect Raiff’s star to continue rising.

Cha Cha Real Smooth is directed by Cooper Raiff and stars Raiff, Dakota Johnson, and Vanessa Burghardt. It will be released in the US on Apple TV+ on June 17th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
