A soldier struggles to adjust to life back home in Causeway, the feature debut of director Lila Neugebauer.
Lynsey had a rough go of it in Afghanistan. She returns to New Orleans with a brain injury, unable to pick up where she left off or start something new. She gets help from doctors, of course, but she finds even more comfort in James, a friend who takes her as she is and gently invites her to sort things out at her own pace.
This looks to be a contained film, at once a standard returning from war drama with the twist of digging deep into the head of a female soldier. It doesn’t seem like there will be many fireworks, meaning Neugebauer will have to build small, subtle moments into an affected film. Her experience is sparse, having only helmed a handful of TV episodes from series like Maid and The Sex Lives of College Girls, but she’s got an impressive duo of actors to lean on.
Jennifer Lawrence returns to her indie roots as Lynsey, indicating that her brief break from acting has allowed her space to take different kinds of roles. Her buddy James is played by the great Brian Tyree Henry. Both have received strong praise during the film’s festival run, so definitely keep an eye out for this one.
Causeway is directed by Lila Neugebauer and stars Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry. It will be released theatrically and on Apple TV+ on November 4th.
