CATS Trailer

In case you hadn’t heard, there’s a Cats movie coming and its weirdness is going to power us through the next few months.

The internet has already done its thing with this bizarre trailer, but in case you still don’t know the plot of the musical on which it’s based, sit down and take in this madness: apparently all the bipedal cats with human faces are in a group called the Jellicles, and every year they send one of their own into the Heaviside Layer to be reborn (I guess because cats have multiple lives?). To be honest, I don’t think the plot matters; I think it exists so you can get really high and watch cat-people dance around.

This extravagance is brought to you by Tom Hooper, the man who made Anne Hathaway sing with a camera one foot from her face and got her an Oscar (that was his adaptation of Les Misérables, in case you’ve blocked those memories). He made some, ahem, choices with that musical, and he’s made just as many with Cats, including off-putting character designs that weren’t achieved with motion capture but no one seems capable of explaining.

The people underneath that digital fur technology only makes the production more weird, with instantly recognizable superstars like Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, and Jason Derulo all converted into cat-like monstrosities. Oh, and this movie is “introducing” us all to Francesca Hayward, a principle dancer in the Royal Ballet, because being one of the best ballet dancers in the world means you still have to be “introduced” to movie audiences.

Maybe all this will work once we see it on the big screen, but for now, well, at least they released a memorable trailer.

Cats is directed by Tom Hooper and stars Idris ElbaJudi Dench, and Taylor Swift. It will be released in the US and the UK on December 20th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
