The link between film and art is well-documented, especially how filmmakers are influenced and inspired by their favourite artists and paintings. One of the best and most famous examples is Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, where many scenes imitate classical paintings from the 1700s. There are plenty of contemporary examples too.
John Hughes had the innate ability of tapping into the voice of a generation unlike any other director I’ve seen. His movies continue to make a lasting impact on the film industry – and it’s easy to see why. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink and a plethora of other “teen” films that redefined the genre, gave thousands of hearts and minds a voice – something coveted if you were an angsty teen growing up in the mid-eighties.

In a 2013 interview, renowned director Steven Spielberg warned of what he called a coming “implosion” regarding summer blockbuster films. Due to Hollywood’s over-reliance on the summer box office, Spielberg believed that blockbusters constrained in this time frame would undergo drastic price changes to set them on top. In an interview, he stated that at some point “you’re gonna have to pay $25 for the next Iron Man, you’re probably only going to have to pay $7 to see Lincoln.

Editor’s Letter Essay of week 41 Since Film Inquiry’s inception it’s been our goal to promote diversity in film. Admittedly, I always think of diversity in film in the broadest sense for Film Inquiry: include and promote women, minorities, the LGBT community – and international and independent film, too.
We all have our films with which we have some kind of indelible personal connection – though they may not be necessarily our favorites. Perhaps it means something particular to you whose meaning wouldn’t translate to other people, or maybe the film is representative of a particular moment in your life or an aspect of your personality, or maybe you feel like the elements of the film are so tailored to your taste that it couldn’t have been meant for anyone but you. Whatever the reason, there exists with certain films a strong personal connection that’s yours and yours alone.
There is a common misconception that documentaries are somehow easier than traditional narrative film making, that all it constitutes is finding something interesting and pointing your camera in that direction. But that is precisely because that is how they are intended to appear. A great documentary is like a great matte painting in a Hollywood feature; it looks completely real and thus its artifice is practically invisible, but it was actually created with extraordinary craft and is the result of a series of artistic choices.

I’m currently in the middle of binge-watching the Kevin Spacey/David Fincher created series House Of Cards on Netflix, and it really is something special. Being an avid movie fan, a character-driven plot is almost unheard of nowadays in the film industry (unless you’re the late Anthony Minghella: see here and here.

Editor’s Letter of Week 39 This week, I decided to catch up on some old movies. I’ve seen my fair share; more than most of the casual film watchers, probably fewer than the average film student. I think my first oldie, if we’re going to be fair, was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
