CALL JANE Trailer

An unlikely group of women keep the lines open in Call Jane, the latest from director Phyllis Nagy.

Joy was excited about her pregnancy until her health took a turn. She and her husband went to the doctor, as they should, who regrettably told her that the pregnancy was putting her life in danger, as he should. What should’ve happened next was Joy getting the choice to risk her life or get an abortion, but this was 1968 and abortion access was restricted. With nowhere else to turn she calls a mysterious number and gets in with a group of women arranging illegal abortions, and Joy’s life is never the same again.

The Janes were instrumental in fighting for abortion access, and this look back on their work seems to take that seriously while also letting them have some fun. This should be a relatively simple formula for Nagy to pull off, especially considering she navigated much trickier material while writing the screenplay for Carol.

The network of women means there are tons of roles to be filled, and a bevy of big names signed up. Elizabeth Banks leads the cast as newcomer Joy, while Sigourney Weaver, Wunmi Mosaku, Kate Mara, and Chris Messina co-star.

This should be a fun look back at history, so look out for it as it hits theaters.

Call Jane is directed by Phyllis Nagy, written by Hayley Schore & Roshan Sethi and stars Elizabeth Banks, Sigourney Weaver, and Wunmi Mosaku. It will be released in the US on October 28th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
