Singapore is riding into the Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film with the bloody western Buffalo Boys.
Following in the footsteps of many greats in the genre, this movie is all about the search for revenge. After a sultan is killed, his family is forced to flee the area and lands in the American West. Scraping together a life on foreign soil forces them to assimilate quickly, and what they pick up are some lessons in fighting for what’s yours. They eventually decide to take these skills back home, seeking out revenge on the murderer who forced this way of life upon them.
The film is the directorial debut for Mike Wiluan, who previously worked as a producer for films as varied as Headshot and Crazy Rich Asians. The former will probably be more applicable to this action-packed adventure, and his involvement with successes like that one bodes well for his taste in bloody fun.
Early reactions to the film have been overwhelmingly positive, having received a warm welcome after its premiere at Fantasia International Film Festival. For those craving a twist on the western or just a new face in the action market, Buffalo Boys looks like one you should seek out.
Buffalo Boys is directed by Mike Wiluan and stars Yoshi Sudarso, Ario Bayu, and Pevita Pearce. It will be released in the US on January 11th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
