The American justice system has been under heavy scrutiny lately, and another low point is being brought up in Bomb City.
Tension was building between the teens in Amarillo, Texas in the late ’90s, with jocks and punks repeatedly clashing. This would eventually lead to a hate crime that brought national attention to the town, and Bomb City aims to bring the messy buildup and aftermath back to people’s attention.
As a feature debut, it’s hardly an easy subject for co-writer and director Jameson Brooks to take on, but as a native of Amarillo himself, it’s almost certainly one he knows well. Brooks also has several shorts under his belt, so he wasn’t walking into the difficult material unprepared.
The film has done well on the festival circuit, racking up several director, actor, and audience awards. From the trailer, it’s pretty easy to see why it might be memorable. There’s some striking visuals, and the inflammatory language used by the lawyers gets at the problems surrounding the case. What people probably won’t know is that the language is taken from the courtroom transcript, meaning that this is a real life scenario that needed little exaggeration to make its point, and it seems Brooks was smart enough to recognize that.
Bomb City is directed by Jameson Brooks and stars Dave Davis, Logan Huffman, and Lorelei Linklater. It will be released in the U.S. on February 9th, 2018. Further release dates are not currently known.
