Netflix is keeping the horror going long after Halloween with Bird Box, the latest from director Susanne Bier.
Based on the book of the same name, the film follows a mother trying to protect her kids from mysterious creatures. It looks like shit hits the fan almost immediately after the monsters’ arrival, with the world descending into chaos and the central family joining with a ragtag group of survivors. The information they have is that the creatures appear as your worst fear, meaning any excursion outside of their barricade must be done blind.
The film is already catching flack for being remarkably similar to A Quiet Place, but considering the book on which Bird Box is based predates that film, the similarities seem to just be a coincidence of theme. Both are talking about the stumbling uncertainty of parenthood, and their quite literal manifestations of this are nothing more than storytelling devices. That these two films are coming out so close together is just a sign of how potent this fear is and how much it begs to be explored.
That someone like Susanne Bier (Brothers, In a Better World) signed on to direct is a good indication that the project has real depth, as is the film’s impressive cast. Sandra Bullock is getting her name singled out as the mother of the main family, but the likes of Sarah Paulson, John Malkovich, and Trevante Rhodes also co-star.
Point being, this is not one of those little Netflix movies. This could be a gem getting dropped right into your home.
