BIG GOLD BRICK Trailer

A writing job gets out of hand in Big Gold Brick, the feature debut of writer/director Brian Petsos.

Well, maybe it doesn’t get out of hand, because the job was out of hand to begin with. Samuel, a writer, was literally run over by his new subject, Floyd. While recuperating, the mysterious man offers to pay Samuel to write his biography. That means moving in with the man’s family and getting to know all of their bizarre secrets, but no one is more confounding than Floyd himself. He claims to have all sorts of unusual connections, which are backed up by the unusual people he puts Samuel in contact with.

Off-kilter seems like an apt word for Big Gold Brick, which effuses a madcap energy that makes it hard to pin down. It’s certainly a mystery-comedy, but that whole talking to a Santa interlude hints that things might not be entirely based in reality. The tone is especially hard to pin down since we have a little background on Petsos, who has made several shorts (including one starring Oscar Isaac, who also appears here) but is unknown in the feature business.

Whatever is going on here attracted a solid cast, with Brooklyn and The OA star Emory Cohen playing Samuel and the ever-reliable Andy Garcia as Floyd. Co-starring with them is Lucy Hale, Megan Fox, and the aforementioned Isaac.

I’d say that if you’re looking for something unusual, then look no further than Big Gold Brick.

Big Gold Brick is directed by Brian Petsos and stars Emory Cohen, Andy Garcia, and Megan Fox. It will be released in the US on February 25th, 2022. International release dates are not currently known.
