BEYOND THE REACH Trailer

There’s this question I always found interesting. “what satisfies the man who has everything?” This is most challenging when posed upon the wealthy and powerful. Especially when their appetites, for things material or not, are insatiable. For example, a guy like Gordon Gekko would be accustomed to the best services or items money can purchase. What is beyond that? One possible answer lies in the form of a hunt. Yet animals lack true ability in the realm of tactics and strategy. On the other hand, humans have been recorded to achieve feats beyond expectation. This is a trailer review for Beyond the Reach.
Directed by Jean-Baptiste Léonetti, Beyond the Reach stars Michael Douglas and Jeremy Irvin. As the story goes, a corporate shark and his guide play a dangerous game of cat and mouse on the sands of the Mojave Desert. Madec, Douglas‘ character, kills a friend of Ben, Irvin’s character. Since Ben is a witness, he must be dealt with albeit as a pawn of Madec’s insanity. As to not actually commit murder, Madec forces his guide into the desert waiting for nature to take the boy’s life. As previously mentioned before though, humans have a tendency to go beyond expectations. From a less romantic POV, it’s basically Gordon Gekko in an action thriller with survivalist themes.
The real star of the film is the landscape. Look at the wide-shots throughout the trailer and check out how breathtaking the vistas are. A good example is the establishing shot after leaving town where the car is just a dusty path to the mountain in the background. It leaves you staring in awe of the titanic grandeur located just near Vegas. In fact, most if not all the shots are well prepared. They all capture the man vs. nature theme so succinctly. As a point of reference, check out the scene when Irvin walks out alone into the desert. He is under threat of getting shot at this point. While the vista is so large, he is so small. The obvious point of that is to set contrast between the overwhelming power of nature and a mortal man.
While I won’t recommend watching Beyond the Reach for its story, I will advocate for its cinematography. Director of photography Russell Carpenter has once again done a wonderful job. Other than that, if you’re interested in an alternate universe Gordon Gekko, there’s no reason not to see it.
Beyond the Reach hits U.K. theatres July 17th, 2015 and Portuguese teatros July 23rd, 2015. It already presented at the Toronto Film Festival and has no U.S release date as of yet.
