An American tourist stirs up trouble in Beckett, the latest from director Ferdinando Cito Filomarino.
Beckett and April were excited to get some time to themselves. The couple may have taken it too far by disappearing to Greece without letting people know their plans, but what trouble could they get into in Greece? Turns out quite a lot, as a car crash leaves Beckett alone and caught up in a conspiracy that reaches far higher than he can imagine. Now he has to flee across the country to find refuge at the American embassy, all the while trying to figure out who he can trust and who he can’t.
What’s really up in the air here is how much this movie will lean into the contentious politics that fuel this everyman thriller, and Filomarino’s background hardly gives you any indication. Outside of a handful of shorts he’s only made one feature, Antonia., a biopic of poet Antonia Pozzi, and done second unit directing for Luca Guadagnino. That doesn’t exactly set him up for a political thriller, so it will be interesting to see where he takes the material.
The project did manage to get some big stars in front of the camera, with John David Washington carrying things as the titular man on the run. Alicia Vikander and Vicky Krieps appear as his girlfriend and a woman who helps him out, respectively, and Boyd Holbrook is a man from the American embassy (whether he’s good or bad remains to be seen).
With a worldwide release on Netflix, expect plenty of people to tune in for this chase.
