BAD LUCK BANGING OR LOONY PORN Trailer

Romanian cinema continues to thrive with Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, the latest from writer/director Radu Jude.

As you can tell from the title, this film has a bit of a racy premise. Emi, a schoolteacher, has a sex tape released online without her consent, which sends “concerned parents” into a frenzy as if most of them aren’t doing it themselves. The premise is spun for laughs, though, as Emi is forced to navigate a highly sexualized world that gasps once actual sex is revealed.

Social mores are under the garish spotlight of satire here, which means this probably won’t be a film for everyone. If you’re attune to that kind of humor, though, you might know that Jude is a reliable purveyor of this c*ckeyed worldview. He lampooned Romanian history with the award-winning Aferim!, and while this moves the timetable to present day, it seems his satire is just as sharp. Bad Luck Banging took home the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and is now poised to unleash it onto the world.

Starring in the film is Katia Pascariu as Emi, who is primarily a stage actress with only one previous film under her belt. That’s a tough enough transition, but have I mentioned that she must pull off this tricky film with a mask on? The movie shot under COVID restrictions, as the film (which was developed before the pandemic) chose to move forward with production. That unexpected milieu is bound to add something to the film, and given its enthusiastic reception, maybe satire makes it more palatable (the sex probably helps too).

Bad Luck Banging or Looney Porn is directed by Radu Jude and stars Katia Pascariu, Claudia Ieremia, and Olimpia Mălai. It will be released in the US on November 19th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
