BAD HAIR Trailer

Beauty standards really take over in Bad Hair, the latest from writer/director Justin Simien.

Anna’s been working hard to make it in the music television business, but unfortunately, hard work isn’t all that’s needed. She has to look her best as well, which in this rigid industry means conforming to some pretty demanding standards. So she gets a weave, a zero fun process that will hopefully pay off in the end. Except the discomfort doesn’t end when the weave is in. Instead, she starts experiencing some side effects from the new hair, ones that won’t move her career forward.

This tongue-in-cheek horror comedy knows exactly how bizarre its premise is, which should give Simien all sorts of chances to get delightfully weird. Going genre is quite a change of pace from his previous feature, Dear White People, which put him on the map with its character-driven look at black students in top tier academia. But hey, he pulled that one off, so why not a horror-comedy?

In a further show of confidence, he put his faith in relative newcomer Elle Lorraine to carry the film as Anna. She’s appeared on a few TV shows, but this is undoubtedly her biggest and most difficult role yet. Luckily she’s got a lot of seasoned performers around her, with the likes of Jay Pharoah, Lena Waithe, Kelly Rowland, and Laverne Cox also appearing. Hopefully, this group can nail the weirdness and make this a good time at the movies.

Bad Hair is directed by Justin Simien and stars Elle Lorraine, Jay Pharoah, and Lena Waithe. It will be released in the US on Hulu on October 23rd, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
