BABYGIRL TRAILER 1

If a Lifetime movie got ran through the A24-WTF filter, you’d probably get something as seductively uneasy as this movie. This is the 1st trailer for Babygirl.

Romy (Nicole Kidman) is a high-ranking CEO finding herself unfulfilled in her private life. However, she finds herself quickly seduced by a young intern named Samuel (Harris Dickinson).

The two embark on a forbidden romance, as Samuel begins asserting his power over Romy, infantilizing her and dominating her in the relationship. Despite her growing panic, Romy finds herself alternately alive and afraid by this new wild part of her life. But as Samuel continues to escalate, and worms his way into Romy’s life to take control, Romy runs the risk of going too far and losing everything.

On paper, this flimsy premise feels like the setup for a soapy Christmas movie. But, thanks to viscerally intense director Halina Reijn (Bodies Bodies Bodies), the 1st trailer becomes an uncomfortably intense examination of power dynamics, consent, and empowerment. Reijn’s directorial work has excelled in forcing humanity’s worst impulses into a bare spotlight, and this new trailer captures the lead characters’ fatal flaws unflinchingly.

The trailer captures the complex nuances of dom-sub relationships, placing you in the emotional rush of protagonist Romy as she’s forced into helplessness after a lifetime of girlbossing.

Kidman and co-star Harris Dickinson have an electrifying chemistry, and as their relationship continues to spiral off a cliff, the two blend pathos and insanity into some of the most watchable performances of 2024. Dickinson, in particular, blends shy-guy charisma with intense dangerousness so seamlessly he threatens to leap out of the screen and strangle the audience.

The film’s release seems strategically timed for a last-minute Oscar push (which both leads look to dominate, judging by this trailer). But if the film can continue to build momentum, it may ALSO find a huge Christmas audience that wants a darker take on a Lifetime holiday film premise.

Directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl will be released theatrically in the US on December 25, 2024. The movie stars Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson in the lead roles.
