Awesome: Overview of 100 Years of Film Set Locations

I stumbled across the following and it was just too awesome not to share: a map of set locations of over 2000 films, spanning the last 100 years! I’ve been exploring the map, checking out especially the more exotic, out-there locations. Of course, many films have been shot in the U.S., mostly on huge sets in Hollywood, which you’ll see reflected on the map. There’s no surprise there. But what is surprising, as well as awesome, is that so many filmmakers have chosen to film their movies in beautiful and sometimes very remote locations. Circumstances must have been challenging in icy cold locations such as Siberia, or in the extremely hot Sahara.

Did you know Batman Begins was filmed in Iceland, U.K. and U.S., for instance? Or that The Last Airbender was filmed in the U.S., Vietnam and Greenland? Or that The Fall was filmed in Indonesia, India, Turkey, Fiji, Brazil, Italy, Czech Republic, Spain, Argentina, Chile, China, U.K., and quite a few other countries? I sure didn’t.

While most of us already knew films were shot on remote, exotic locations, it’s great to see them put together like this, and it puts film making a much more global scope. Film is everywhere, everywhere is film.

Enjoy exploring this map… I know I’ve been randomly clicking the yellow dots for a while now, and I’ve been surprised quite a few times.
