Return to Pandora in Avatar: The Way of Water, the latest from writer/director James Cameron.

Maybe you’ve heard of a little movie called Avatar? You know, the highest-grossing movie of all time? In 2009 the 3D extravaganza wowed audiences worldwide, and somehow it’s taken over ten years for the first of many sequels to hit theaters.

The film picks up with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) living peacefully with his family on Pandora, but threats arise that cause them to return to battle to protect their home once again. Yes, that means Zoe Saldana is back as Neytiri as well, with new cast members including Michelle Yeoh, Kate Winslet, and Jemaine Clement.

Plot details are scarce, but since the plot wasn’t the key to Avatar’s success why should it be the selling point here? The first film was all about technological spectacle, aka the Cameron specialty, and he’s bringing the same innovation here with the development of motion capture that was done underwater. He hasn’t avoided his other specialty either: making headlines for exorbitant budgets that make his movies seem doomed for failure. It happened with both Titanic and Avatar, but they managed to exceed all expectations. Rumors are swirling again about Avatar: The Way of Water, but at this point, why doubt him?

Avatar: The Way of Water is directed by James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Michelle Yeoh. It will be released in the US on December 16, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
