An assassin goes rogue in Ava, the latest from director Tate Taylor.

It’s a tale as old as time, really: one of the world’s top assassins starts deviating from easy kills. Maybe morality is gnawing at her or maybe it’s just simple boredom. Whatever the reason, she starts taking unnecessary risks, putting the whole enterprise she works for in jeopardy. The higher-ups get nervous and consider her dispensable. The older fellow who trained her keeps them at bay. That is until one of her missions finally does go wrong and she finds herself fighting for her own survival.

I don’t know how Taylor keeps bouncing from genre to genre, but he’s proven to be one of the most versatile populist directors out there. He’s done the Oscar-winning The Help, the biopic Get on Up, and the silly horror movie Ma, and now he’s adding this action thriller to the list. I mean, sure, he hasn’t done this sort of thing before, but at this point, it seems wrong to question what he can and can’t do.

It also helps that he seems to draw great actors back to him, here re-teaming with his The Help star Jessica Chastain. She’ll get to kick some butt alongside a strong supporting cast that includes Colin Farrell, John Malkovich, Geena Davis, and Common, which looks to be the joy of this genre exercise.

Ava is directed by Tate Taylor and stars Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, and John Malkovich. It will be released in the UK on August 27th, 2020, and in the US on September 25th, 2020. For more release dates, click here.
