ATOMIC BLONDE Trailer

Charlize Theron isn’t abandoning the action genre after the success of Mad Max: Fury Road, taking on a violent, self-sufficient woman with all her appendages intact in Atomic Blonde.

The film is based on the graphic novel “The Coldest City”, a Cold War spy romp with plenty of action and intrigue. The project attracted not only Theron but John Wick co-director David Leitch, and the influence of the former stunt coordinator is all over this trailer.

The rough and immaculately choreographed combat feels very reminiscent of John Wick, and while the lead has changed genders, it still immerses her in a veiled society hidden just under the noses of us regular folk. No, the biggest change seems to come from the side characters, with James McAvoy adding some prickly humor and Sofia Boutella some titillation.

The combination of extreme violence and gratuitous sex could lead to accusations of vapid thrills, but the trailer gives us a knowing wink through its editing. This doesn’t look like a tone deaf glorification of a female Bond but an acknowledgment that women have a place in these worlds, too. That’s something the John Wick franchise has struggled with, and Atomic Blonde may just fill that void.

Atomic Blonde is directed by David Leitch and stars Charlize Theron, Sofia Boutella, and James McAvoy. It will be released in the U.S. on July 28th, 2017 and in the U.K. on August 11th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
