AT ETERNITY’S GATE Trailer

At Eternity’s Gate is the second film about famed Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh to be released in the last two years. Last year saw the release of Loving Vincent, a film that consisted of hundreds of painted frames which told the story of the artist’s period in the small French village Auvers-sur-Oise.

At Eternity’s Gate is the first film in eight years by painter turned filmmaker Julian Schnabel who became known for his films about artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat (Basquiat) and Reinaldo Arenas (Before Night Falls) as well as his acclaimed biopic about former Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly). Considering his own work as a painter it’ll be interesting to see his take on Van Gogh.

At Eternity’s Gate is not the first film about Van Gogh, he has been played by actors as diverse as Kirk Douglas, Martin Scorsese, Tim Roth, Tchéky Karyo, Jacques Dutronc and Tony Curran. Considering this rich history of portrayals it’ll be interesting to see what veteran actor Willem Dafoe brings to the role. Given the talented cast and director and its awards season friendly release date, At Eternity’s Gate might be the film that finally wins Willem Dafoe a much deserved Oscar.

At Eternity’s Gate is directed by Julian Schnabel and stars Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, Mads Mikkelsen, and Oscar Isaac. It will be released in the U.S. on November 16th, 2018 with an as of yet unknown U.K. release date. For international release dates click here.
