What to do when the aliens arrive is one of the great questions before us, and I don’t just mean in the fictional realm. Humans have been thinking about our introduction since before we ventured into outer space, even going so far as to curate images and sounds of Earth, slap them on a couple gold records, and attach them on the space probes Voyager 1 and 2. The likelihood of these ever being found by intelligent life is minimal, but it’s a pleasant daydream to imagine the utter confusion of anything that might find them.
Then again, our hello into the abyss might have negative outcomes. We certainly have our own paranoia about encountering other life forms, and our imaginations have spun quite a few nasty scenarios. Will they invade, probe, or will we destroy ourselves like one big Maple Street?
If something does turn up on our celestial doorstep, there won’t be a set procedure to follow, and it’s in that period of confusion that Arrival takes place. It’ll explore the cerebral side of alien encounters, particularly if it sticks to the Nebula-winning short Story of Your Life on which it’s based. Don’t think that takes away the potential for violence or wonder, though. There will be aliens (we’ve already seen an appendage!), and their presence could lead even the most sound minds to unexpected places.
Arrival is directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. It will be released in the U.S. and the U.K. on November 11th, 2016. For international release dates, click here.
