ARCTIC Trailer

Mads Mikkelsen treks across the wilderness in Arctic, a survival story from first-time director Joe Penna.

The journey is precipitated by a plane crash that strands Mikkelsen far from civilization. A failed rescue attempt only complicates things, leaving him with an injured companion. Considering the circumstances, he’s relatively comfortable where he is: the downed plane provides shelter and there’s food swimming below him. Striking out across the frozen landscape isn’t ideal, but the woman in his care might not be able to wait for another rescue attempt. His choice is stark: stay or go.

Isolated survival stories have been done before, but they are relatively rare because of the complications that come with them. Tough shooting conditions, potentially repetitive scenarios, and little opportunity for characters to talk through anything puts massive demands on the actors and director, which makes this a surprising first feature for Penna.

Penna made his name on YouTube, but various commercials and shorts have given him experience in more traditional filmmaking. Making something like Arctic is still a bold move, though, so I guess he’s into sink or swim scenarios like the one in this film.

But for many people, this will be all about seeing Mikkelsen huff and puff for a couple hours. He’s long been a respected figure on the international stage, but he’s had few opportunities to shine like he does here. It’s his film to carry, at least in front of the camera, and luckily those are steady hands to depend on.

Arctic is directed by Joe Penna and stars Mads Mikkelsen. It will be released in the US on February 1st, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
