AMERICAN ULTRA Trailer

American Ultra

I’ll say this straight. Ever since Zombieland, I look forward to action comedies starring Jesse Eisenberg. He has that fun combination of being adorably awkward but quick-witted. In fact, I’m really hoping for a list of do’s and don’t s from his character in this film. There is even an extra bonus: John Leguizamo and Bill Pullman are part of the cast too. I love them but I wasn’t sure they were still in the industry. Anyway, I’m presenting to you the trailer for American Ultra. I have absolutely no idea what that title could be referencing.

American Ultra is directed by Nima Nourizadeh and has Kirsten Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg as top billing. For this narrative, Eisenberg plays a stoner named Mike Howell. Mike is a sleeper agent under the U.S. government who is now considered a liability. Kristen Stewart plays Phoebe, Mike’s girlfriend, and most likely his accomplice, and possible hostage if my powers of prediction hold up. As a liability, Mike is a target for extermination but is “too well-trained and too high” for government agents (emphasis on government agents) to handle. Fantasy land, here we come!

It looks fun. By fun, I mean crazy stuff happens like a ricochet shot on a cooking pan tossed in the air. That and the scene where he’s glowing the dark. It truly takes an original mind to think up a glow in the dark martial arts sequence. All the colors, man! The best part of that scene is Mike looking off into the distance with his pupils fully dilated as he says “I feel kinda amazing” while glowing blue. No other description is more worthy than “guilty pleasure” for this flick.

If you’re a fan of That 70’s Show, you know Topher Grace unless you came in on that awful last season. Anyway, if you are a fan, it’s difficult to see him as top personnel in the government. He’s still Eric Foreman. This isn’t a dig at this acting ability but an observation of roles he plays well. Sarcasm and witty comedy are his forte so he’s similar to Eisenberg. As an antagonist, he’s trying to play tough and in charge but that just brings back memories of his Venom role in that movie about spiders I don’t like to talk about. This is just a trailer observation, though. The fully released entity of Topher Grace’s character may exceed what I see here.

American Ultra comes to U.S. theaters August 21st 2015 and U.K. theaters August 28th 2015. For the complete list of release dates, click here.
