ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE Trailer

Netflix is keeping the romantic comedies coming with Always Be My Maybe, the feature debut of director Nahnatchka Khan.

This one works from a pretty classic setup: childhood sweethearts whose lives went separate ways reunite in their home town, and while the old chemistry is still there, sparks aren’t flying evenly. Marcus, who stayed in town, is quite smitten by the adult Sasha, but Sasha has spent the years as a celebrity chef, so her options are a bit wider. Sure, they’re into each other, but do their lives fit together anymore?

Netflix has made romantic comedies into their own cottage industry, churning them out and proving their appeal even while theatrical releases have been sparse. Fans of the genre have come to trust in Netflix’s steady offerings, making the freshness of Khan almost irrelevant. Still, she’s not a total newbie. She cut her teeth as a writer and producer on many television shows, and she directed a few episodes along the way. This is still a jump, for sure, but it seems to be a pretty safe one for Khan.

She’s even working with her Fresh Off the Boat lead Randall Park, pairing him with stand-up comic Ali Wong. Those familiar faces should be enough to pull in viewers, but just in case they needed backup, Keanu Reeves also appears (for name recognition backup, not the murdering kind). Given the security of this genre, though, I doubt he’s really needed.

Always Be My Maybe is directed by Nahnatchka Khan and stars Ali Wong, Randall Park, and Keanu Reeves. It will be released worldwide on Netflix on May 31st, 2019.
