ALPHA Trailer

The coming-of-age film goes way back in Alpha, because some stories really are timeless.
You may have seen this trailer kicking around for the last year or so, and no, you aren’t confusing it with some other big-budget, prehistoric adventure tale. Not too many of those are made, and this one has been marred by pushed release date after pushed release date. It seems to have settled on August, meaning we’ll finally get to see the teased origin of man’s best friend.
That’s right, this isn’t just a coming-of-age film; it’s also a boy and his dog story. These two frameworks have been woven together before, but adding in an ice age survival tale makes the film seem busy, but at least you can’t fault its ambition.
The filmmakers seemed to realize they were telling a huge story, so they employed a grand scale to match. Envisioned as an IMAX 3D epic, you can tell that director Albert Hughes is going for some breathtaking visuals, and the striking nature of this trailer means it’s hard to forget. That also means I remember seeing it a year ago, and the question of why it’s been delayed so long has been lingering in my head. In a strange way, that’s also made me very curious to finally see it. Well played, advertisers. Well played.
Alpha is directed by Albert Hughes and stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, and Natassia Malthe. It will be released in the US on August 17th, 2018 and in the UK on August 24th, 2018. For international release dates, click here.
