Stand-up comics usually aren’t the most put together people in the world, and that scruffiness gives Mary Elizabeth Winstead a chance to shine in All About Nina.
Partially for her career and partially to run from her life, Winstead’s character makes the jump from New York to Los Angeles early in the film. The west coast introduces her to a new way of life, a new man, and even the potential for a breakout on a comedy show, but old habits won’t let her make a clean start. She’s still got a lot to sort out, and she’ll do that with all the comedy and drama that comes with flailing attempts at success.
Winstead has been hovering on a lot of people’s radars thanks to a series of impressive but not quite star-making turns, and a meaty role like this could be her ticket to bigger things. She’ll need to be messy and funny and charming to hold the film together, and word from the film’s festival run is that she delivers all this and more.
Early reactions were also kind to first-time writer/director Eva Vives, who took a story usually reserved for men and put a woman at its center. It’s just enough of a twist to make the movie feel unique, and if nothing else, it gives audiences another chance to kick back and enjoy Winstead’s work.
All About Nina is directed by Eva Vives and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Common, and Chace Crawford. It will be released in the US on September 28th, 2018. Further release dates are not currently known.
