Agatha Harkness assembles a dastardly coven of witches, embarking on a perilous journey to reclaim her powers in Marvel’s next event TV series.
The trailer opens on small-town detective Agnes (Kathryn Hahn), investigating a recent murder. However, upon glimpsing the witch Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), Agnes begin to break free of the magical prison placed upon her by Wanda Maximoff, and remembers her past as the witch Agatha Harkness.
Now, in order to regain her powers, Agatha and Rio assemble a coven of witches, each more dastardly than the last. Together, they embark down the legendary Witches’ Road, encountering macabre trials and tribulations on their way to unlocking the most devilish magical powers in the land.
Like most of you, I was burned out on Marvel’s TV properties. They had begun to blend together, visually and emotionally, and felt increasingly like quantity over quality. The 1st trailer for Agatha All Along looks to change that.
Visually, the series is Marvel’s first to truly establish a visual identity. Marvel’s style has largely become homogenized, but Agatha All Along trades the traditional muted palettes for a look closer to Haunted Mansion. Star Kathryn Hahn remains a campy delight in the titular role, and director Schaeffer has assembled a who’s who of character actors (Sasheer Zamata, Joe Locke, Patti LuPone, etc.) that go all in on the witchy ridiculousness. Co-star Aubrey Plaza remains a notable outlier, with her trademark disaffected delivery serving as a major distraction from everyone else’s over-the-top style.
The trailer offers few plot details (typical for Marvel properties nowadays), but addresses the end of WandaVision in a way that feels much less ham-fisted than other Marvel shows. For once, it doesn’t feel like a TV property exists to fill in gaps between the movies, but also doesn’t feel disconnected from the world at large. It’s a tricky balance that Marvel often struggles with, but has nailed this time around.
Directed by Jac Schaeffer, Agatha All Along will release on Disney+ on September 18, 2024. The limited series stars Kathryn Han and Aubrey Plaza in the titular roles.
