AD ASTRA Trailer

The existential dread of space comes crashing down in Ad Astra, the latest from co-writer/director James Gray.

Specifically, it comes crashing down for one man, Roy, an astronaut following in the footsteps of his father. His dad disappeared on a mission decades ago, and Roy’s spent his life trying to live up to his legacy. Turns out dear ol’ dad isn’t as dead as he assumed, though, and his pop’s top secret experiments may be putting the entire solar system in jeopardy. Roy is tasked with shutting down the project and saving the planet, but those stakes pale in comparison to the familial baggage he’s bringing with him.

Science fiction is whole new territory for Gray, who made his name with lavish dramas like The Immigrant and The Lost City of Z. The latter did see him take on expansive colonization themes, though, and it will be interesting to see if he can continue pushing past his comfort zone.

Helping him out is an all-star cast, with Brad Pitt as the beleaguered son facing off against Tommy Lee Jones as his mysterious father. Co-starring is Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland. With so many respected players and a premise that’s out of this world, Ad Astra has people’s expectations sky high. Hopefully it can live up to them.

Ad Astra is directed by James Gray and stars Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, and Ruth Negga. It will be released in the UK on September 18th, 2019 and in the US on September 20th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
