ABE Trailer

A kid hopes food can bring people together in Abe, the latest from director Fernando Grostein Andrade.

Specifically, he hopes to bring his family together, who are embroiled in a longstanding culture war. His mother is Jewish and his father is Muslim, and although his parents don’t care about this in the slightest, the rest of the family does. Abe has no strong feelings either way, especially since all he really wants to do is explore his budding interest in cooking. These two aspects of his life come crashing together when he meets Chico, a fusion chef who can teach the boy about far more than cooking.

You probably recognize the titular Abe since he’s played by Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp. He’ll be on full display here instead of lost in an ensemble, so I guess we’ll see if he can carry charm all on his own. Co-starring with him is Seu Jorge, Dagmara Dominczyk, and Arian Moayed.

This looks to be a lighthearted romp through potentially serious material, a challenging tone for Andrade to hit, particularly since he mostly works in documentaries. He’ll need to create a mood and some delicious food out of thin air, but if he pulls it off, this could be delightful escapism.

Abe is directed by Fernando Grostein Andrade and stars Noah Schnapp, Dagmara Dominczyk, and Seu Jorge. It will be released in the US on VOD on April 17th, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
