A mystery unfolds after a woman disappears in A Simple Favor, the latest from director Paul Feig.
Based on the book of the same name, the film follows two moms who start hanging out after their boys take a shine to each other. This sort of casual relationship happens when kids are involved, but one of the women becomes much more invested than the other. The confidence and swagger of Blake Lively’s Emily is alluring, and Anna Kendrick’s Stephanie falls under her spell. Then Emily disappears, leaving Stephanie with a tantalizing mystery she can’t help but investigate.
With Paul Feig involved you might expect the movie to be peppered with comedy, sort of like his genre blenders The Heat and Spy. However, the trailer purports that this is no comedic affair, instead leaning entirely on the pulpy mystery at its center. That’s a notable step away from what made Feig a big player in Hollywood, and it will be interesting to see how he handles more straightforward material.
He got two great actresses to lead the film in Kendrick and Lively, both of whom have the range to play the material however Feig wanted. No matter how dark they chose to go, the movie is shaping up to be an engrossing mystery.
A Simple Favor is directed by Paul Feig and stars Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, and Henry Golding. It will be released in the US on September 14th, 2018 and in the UK on September 21st, 2018. For international release dates, click here.
