A FAMILY AFFAIR TRAILER

Netflix’s newest star-studded rom-com delves into the nuttiness of dating a famous person, in the 1st trailer for A Family Affair.

Zara Ford (Joey King) is the suffering assistant to egotistical Hollywood hunk Chris Cole (Zac Efron). Zara is shocked when she returns home to find her widowed mother Brooke (Nicole Kidman) in bed with Chris.

As Zara frets over Chris’ ego breaking her mother’s heart, Brooke grapples with desires she thought she had lost forever, and Chris feels like he’s finally found someone worth growing up her. As the relationship grows, this trio learns a new meaning of love and family in the turbulent city of Angels.

Netflix has quietly grown into a home for mid-budget rom-coms spurned by traditional movie studios. And A Family Affair fits neatly into that category. While packed to the gills with starpower, the 1st trailer feels shoddily put together, with awkward lines and one-dimensional characters leaning too far into melodramatic parody.

But, as Netflix has proven, sometimes it’s fun to give into the sheer cheesiness of it all. Hollywood relationships have historically been rife with drama, and Efron’s real life as a teen star lends credibility and roundedness to an otherwise bland idea. And with Nicole Kidman seemingly unable to turn in a bad performance, A Family Affair might just be worth your precious watchtime.

A Family Affair is directed by Richard LaGravenese and will be released on Netflix on June 28th, 2024. The movie stars Joey King, Nicole Kidman & Zac Efron.
