Nick (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is an alcoholic detective hired by young widow Penelope (Shailene Woodley) to investigate the death of her husband Leo Vardakis (Richard Madden), on a wealthy Greek island. The corrupt Vardakis family owns the local police, forcing Nick to work in secret.
Coming up against corruption in every corner, Nick will have to rely on all the tricks in his trade to uncover the true killer. But when everyone has their own agendas, Nick will have to figure out whose jealousy drove them too far before his own demons bring him to his knees.
The 1st trailer for Killer Heat feels like an ode to the old ITV detective specials from the 90s. Everything from the suave yet gritty appearances, the sun-soaked atmosphere, and the wealthy ensemble with hidden darknesses harkens back to a bygone era of detective films. In an era where most mystery films lean heavily on satire and comedy, Killer Heat stands apart from the pack by playing everything straight.
Gordon-Levitt plays a charming detective with personal demons perfectly, turning on the charm against a coterie of villains that clearly disdain him. The supporting cast, particularly Madden play into their classic archetypes beautifully without ever delving too far into caricature. The plot feels complicated and expansive, but not overly reliant on the twist.
If Prime Video can stick the landing, they may have got a new franchise on their hands. It’s not as flashy, smart or splashy as a Knives Out, but it could be a sexy lineup for Prime Video’s catalogue on a Saturday night.
Directed by Phillippe Lacote, Killer Heat was released on Prime Video on September 26, 2024. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Richard Madden in the lead roles.
