A cop must confront his past in 21 Bridges, the latest from director Brian Kirk.
When Andre Davis (Chadwick Boseman) was just a boy, his father was killed in an on-the-job shooting. Despite having this first-hand knowledge of the risks that come with police work, he grew up to a detective in the NYPD, and when several cops are killed he’s the one that gets called in to find the perpetrators. He’s invested, maybe a little too invested, but he’s willing to take the crazy steps to get the job done, including locking down all of New York City for the manhunt.
Kirk only has one feature under his belt, but he comes to the project with an impressive array of TV credits. Work on projects like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and Dexter makes me think this crime thriller should be comfortably in his wheelhouse, but let’s face it, most people will be showing up for Boseman.
While Black Panther launched him into stardom, Boseman has been impressing in biopics and other smaller projects for years. This should give him the opportunity to blend his history of great character work with his newfound action hero status, and luckily for him the entire thing isn’t really resting on his shoulders. He’s got a solid supporting cast to play off of, including Sienna Miller, Taylor Kitsch, and J.K. Simmons. Hopefully all these talented people assembled for a project worthy of their skills.
21 Bridges is directed by Brian Kirk and stars Chadwick Boseman, Sienna Miller, and Stephan James. It will be released in the US and the UK on September 27th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
