TWO LOVERS AND A BEAR Trailer

Dane DeHaan, who stole our hearts as the troubled teen in The Place Beyond The Pines, is back again in a romantic drama called Two Lovers and a Bear. The film, directed by Kim Nguygen (whose film Rebelle was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2013) had its North American premiere at TIFF last week and debuted at Cannes this past spring.
Two Lovers And A Bear takes place far-north, in the Canadian province of Nunavut. From the trailer, we immediately witness a contrast between the vastness of the great white arctic and the warmth of the lovers’ small world. Dane DeHaan and Tatiana Maslany play Roman and Lucy: two lost souls who protect each other from something dark and looming (their past? the present oblivion?) And then, of course, there’s the bear.
About a minute into the trailer, a polar bear appears before Dane DeHaan’s character, prompting a shift from the film’s dreamy, romantic narrative to that of a traditional thriller. Perhaps symbolic of the couple’s resurgent past, the bear brings along a new character: a bearded man who haunts the two lovers.
From the tense, quiet moments and heart-warming lines featured in the trailer, Two Lovers And A Bear promises to deliver on some life-affirming sentiments with a healthy dose of paranoia. Plus, we can look forward to a heartfelt performance by Tatiana Maslany, who recently won an Emmy for her role in the TV series Orphan Black.
20th Century Fox and Netflix definitely felt the love for Two Lovers And A Bear, since both companies acquired US distribution rights after the film’s screening at TIFF this month. Although its US theatrical release date has not yet been announced, I am excited to see this film and I have a good feeling that Maslany and DeHaan are two actors we should keep our eyes on.
Two Lovers And A Bear is directed by Kim Nyugen and stars Tatiana Maslany, Dane DeHaan and Gordon Pinset. It will be released in Canada on October 7th, 2016. It will be available for streaming on Netflix in early 2017. For international release dates, click here.
