MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE Trailer

The box office strength of YA adaptations have waned in recent years, but Twentieth Century Fox gambled on a big finale for the Maze Runner series. Granted, The Death Cure was supposed to release in early 2017, but production was delayed after the on set injury of star Dylan O’Brien. Rest assured that he made a full recovery, and from the looks of this trailer, it seems like he jumped right back into the action.

The finale sees the Gladers (remember, the group began the series in a glade surrounded by a giant puzzle) trying to save their captured friends. The breakout attempt means even more action from this already action-heavy series, but it’s hard to tell if this means a course correction from the drab zombie chases that drug down The Scorch Trials or a return to the tight, mystery-laden sequences from The Maze Runner.

Refreshingly, the final installment is not being split into two parts, meaning The Death Cure is the grand finale. Unless, of course, they decide to adapt the prequel books from author James Dashner, but that would require an odd jump back in time for the series.

Director Wes Ball, who has now helmed all three entries, was clear before the release of The Scorch Trials that he envisioned one definitive finale for Maze Runner. Hopefully that means a crisp, unpadded exit for one of YA’s starker series.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure is directed by Wes Ball and stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. It will be released in the U.S. on January 26th, 2018 and in the U.K. on February 9th, 2018. For international release dates, click here.
