MORTDECAI Trailer

Mortdecai is the story of an art dealer searching for a lost painting that links to a bank account full of Nazi gold. It stars Johnny Depp as Charles Mortdecai with exceptional support from the likes of Ewan McGregor and Olivia Munn (Magic Mike). David Koepp (Premium Rush), known mostly for his screenwriting credits, helms the director’s seat for this film.

So, I was looking over the comments section on YouTube and stumbled upon the perfect description for the trailer: Goofy Gatsby. I’ll be honest here, there is absolutely no indication of the plot mentioned above. The trailer is basically saying “here’s Johnny Depp” as another over-exaggerated character. Charles Mortdecai is just another clown for audiences to laugh at.

Alright, now take a moment to absorb that. It’s perfect, isn’t it? This movie isn’t for you to think, it’s for you to enjoy. The introduction scene is Depp looking into the camera and combing his brilliant mustache. He seduces you with vanity. Reminiscent of Dick Cheney‘s hunting accident back in 2006, Charles shoots his loyal manservant. Also reminiscent of the accident, the manservant, Jock, dismisses all signs of self-respect by saying, “Excellent shot, Sir.” Then there is the rampant misogyny. Put one of your hands in front of you and pretend you’re squeezing something that is at chest level. Consider that a customary greeting approved by none other than Charlie Mortdecai.

The namesake of the film is based on writer Kyril Bonfiglioli‘s Mortdecai series of comic thriller novels. He’s been compared to the great P.G. Wodehouse in terms of structure and style. Three of Bonfiglioli‘s novels have been collected into a trilogy available if you can find it. Sadly, Bonfiglioli passed away in 1985. He left one unfinished book behind, The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery, that was completed posthumously. Judging from various reviews spread across the interweb, it sounds like a great read if you’re interested in this genre.

The film seems worth seeing if you have nothing better to do and want to get away from the real world for a bit. It has the great talent of exceptional actors that will hopefully have you on the floor laughing. If not, listen to what the trailer commands: he will grow on you. Hopefully, not like fungus.

Mortdecai comes to US theaters on February 6, 2015 and UK theaters on January 30, 2015. For the list of worldwide release dates, click here.
